Oracle Database Performance EngineerĀ 

MBI Digital is looking for a Database Performance Engineer with minimum of 10 years experience who acts as a leader to establish proactive performance monitoring, complex query optimization and hands on troubleshooting of Oracle database platform. 

This role works closely with customers’ DB Administrators, DB Operations, Application Development, Production Support, Capacity Planning, Performance Testing and RDBMS/DW technology vendors to ensure the production and non-production database systems are optimally performing and highly available.  A Database Performance Engineer works in various ways in various roles; be it part of a team-initiative conducting a deep-dive performance analysis on a mission critical application, an individual full-stack analyst who can proactively seek out, prove root-cause and provide tuning recommendations for database configuration, application code (transactions and processes), and as a performance advisor offering best practice guidelines to new and existing project development teams.

This is a 100% remote opportunity.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Troubleshoot performance issues currently affecting the stability of Oracle environments; perform root cause analysis and provide Production Support with recommendations for issue resolution including DB configuration.

  • Proactively identify and tune long-running or inefficient transactions that are consuming an excessive amount of resources, and provide performance improvement recommendations via SQL tuning, index design, code rewrite, application architecture improvement, suggested job-scheduling changes, etc.

  • Provide recommendations for system-level performance adjustments to the Oracle platform.

  • Conduct technical training sessions and seminars on writing efficient SQL and job streams, educating end users and developers on best practices for the Oracle platform.

  • Participate in a consulting role with design and architectural activities for new project initiatives, offering input, guidelines, and insight from a performance perspective.  Find performance opportunities and pinpoint bottlenecks pre-production. 

  • A deep-understanding of the architectures of the database products, host/disk architectures that are in use by customers.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work history.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in large scale databases environments and diverse teams.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as DB performance analyst/tuner.

  • Excellent understanding of database architecture with a focus on performance.

  • Ability to see the big picture as well as attention to details to pinpoint the root cause and tuning fix.

  • Fluent in SQL including product-specific dialects.

  • Experience with hands-on production performance support.

  • Knowledge of database optimization and fine-tuning techniques.

  • Experience using performance aggregation tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, Solar Winds, DynaTrace etc.

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Ability to quickly figure out the root cause of performance and other technical issues and provide solutions.

  • Proven strong written and oral communication skills with ability to communicate effectively in meetings, email and informal discussions.

  • Strong time management skills and excellent organizational skills with ability to juggle multiple demands.

 

Oracle-specific Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficient in Oracle performance analysis including the use and interpretation of Oracle execution plan, SQL monitoring report, AWR report, V$ views and the AWR tables is mandatory. 

  • SQL and PL/SQL coding and troubleshooting experience for analyzing packages/procedures/triggers/application code is mandatory.

  • Clear understanding of Oracle wait events and ability to effectively use wait event analysis in performance troubleshooting is mandatory.

  • Physical design considerations including index and partition designs in Oracle is mandatory.

  • Well acquainted with all Oracle SQL performance analysis and improvement tools such as  SQL Tuning Advisor, SQL Access Advisor, SQLTXplain, sqltrace, DBMS_XPLAN, etc.

  • Experience in large Oracle RAC environments and associated tuning considerations.

  • Some hands-on Oracle Enterprise Manager experience is helpful.
